For Rust PvP, start with a small dot or cross in a color you can distinguish from the terrain. Rust already has a native crosshair; try that first. A custom overlay is useful if you want a different appearance or a fixed center-screen reference.
Native Rust crosshair or an overlay?
Facepunch added a native crosshair in the June 2022 Combat Update. It indicates approximate accuracy based on your weapon and stance, and can be disabled in the options menu.
A fixed overlay marks one position on your screen. It does not expand with weapon spread or tell you exactly where an arrow or bullet will land. Keep using your weapon sights when you need their aiming information.
If the native crosshair already looks right to you, you may not need another app. If you want control over the appearance, ChrossX lets you choose a style, size, and color with simple controls.
A starting point for Rust crosshair settings
These are suggested visibility settings, not a tested competitive optimum. Use the apparent size on your monitor as the reference; an app's size slider may not correspond directly to pixels.

Make one adjustment at a time
- Use your usual resolution and field of view. Choose either the native reticle or your overlay as your main reference so overlapping marks do not distract you.
- On a practice server that permits overlays, look at foliage, sky, rock, and a dark interior. Pick a color that remains easy to find.
- Look at a small target farther away. Shrink the dot until it stops covering the detail you are trying to see.
- Check hip-fire and aiming down sights separately. A fixed mark cannot account for recoil, spread, or projectile drop.
Are crosshair overlays allowed in Rust?
Facepunch's Combat Update explicitly permits third-party crosshairs. That is general guidance about crosshairs, not a certification of a specific ChrossX build. Check the current rules of any server or tournament you join.

What is the best crosshair color for Rust?
There is no single winner for every scene. Compare two contrasting colors against the terrain you actually play in, and choose the one you can find without searching for it.
Will an overlay improve hip-fire accuracy?
It can make the center of the screen easier to locate. It does not tighten weapon spread or remove recoil. A visible reference and a mechanically accurate shot are different things.
How much RAM does ChrossX use?
