For a Sea of Thieves crosshair overlay, start with a small dot that stays visible against water, sky, and ship interiors. It gives you a fixed screen reference. It does not calculate cannon trajectories or tell you exactly where a shot will land.
What does a Sea of Thieves crosshair overlay do?
A fixed overlay keeps a chosen mark at the same screen position. If you find it difficult to judge the center of your view, that can be a useful visual reference. ChrossX lets Windows players adjust the reference's style, size, and color.
The mark is independent of what your weapon is doing. It cannot account for spread, projectile travel, target movement, or a moving ship. Use the weapon and the results of your shots as feedback instead of treating a centered dot as a guaranteed hit.
Suggested crosshair settings
Use these as starting points for visibility, not as a tested formula for better aim. The apparent dot width on your screen matters more than a particular slider number.
| Setting | Starting point | Adjust when… |
|---|---|---|
| Style | A dot or a small cross | Use a dot for less obstruction; a cross may be easier to locate. |
| Dot size | About 3–5 visible pixels at 1080p | Reduce it if it hides distant details or a weapon sight. |
| Color | Try magenta or bright green | Choose the one you can distinguish from both water and sky. |
| Position | Center of the game display | Recheck after changing resolution or display scaling. |
Check visibility before a voyage
- Use your usual resolution and compare your chosen color against the horizon.
- Move into a darker interior and check that the mark remains visible.
- Look through your weapon's sights. Reduce the mark if it obscures the sight picture.
- When trying a cannon, watch where shots land. Adjust aim from those observations; a fixed overlay supplies no trajectory information.
Are crosshair overlays allowed in Sea of Thieves?
Rare's enforcement policy, updated April 9, 2026, says a crosshair overlay is not itself a bannable offence. It also warns that external software can still trigger security systems and result in enforcement. Rare places the risk of using such tools on the player.
This is not an approval of a specific ChrossX build. Read the linked policy before use, including any later changes. On Windows, start with windowed or borderless mode and follow our overlay compatibility checks.
Common Sea of Thieves crosshair questions
Will an overlay help me aim cannons?
It can give you a consistent visual reference. It cannot predict the path of a cannonball, account for ship movement, or calculate the lead needed for a moving target.
What color should I use over the ocean?
Try a color distinct from the water and sky on your display. Compare bright green and magenta in daylight and darker conditions, then keep whichever you can find most easily.
Does ChrossX work on Xbox or PlayStation?
ChrossX runs on Windows. This guide concerns the PC version of Sea of Thieves, not installing an overlay on a console.
