A missing DayZ crosshair may be a server setting, rather than a problem with your game. Check the server's rules first. Where external crosshairs are permitted, a small dot is a simple starting point for a center-screen reference.

Why does DayZ have no crosshair on some servers?

Bohemia's DayZ server configuration documentation lists disableCrosshair as a server-controlled setting. An administrator can turn the native crosshair off, so joining a different server can change what you see.

If you run the server, consult that setting and your intended gameplay rules. If you are a player, ask the administrator before adding an external reference. An intentionally hidden reticle is not automatically an invitation to replace it.

Where permitted, an overlay such as ChrossX provides a fixed reference with a customizable appearance. It does not know your weapon's alignment, calculate bullet travel, or compensate for camera movement.

Keep the mark subtle enough to see small objects and distant silhouettes around it. These are suggestions to adjust on your own screen, not settings validated in player testing.

Suggested crosshair settings and how to adjust them
SettingStarting pointAdjust when…
StyleA simple dotTry a small cross if you repeatedly lose the dot.
Dot sizeAbout 2–4 visible pixels at 1080pIncrease it on a higher-resolution or more distant display.
ColorTry cyan or magentaCompare against foliage, buildings, and low-light areas.
PositionCenter of the game displayCheck alignment after switching camera view or display settings.

Check it in the conditions you play in

  1. Use your normal resolution and Windows scaling. Start with the smallest clearly visible dot.
  2. Compare it against a bright sky, a forest, and a dark doorway. Change color before making it much larger.
  3. Look at small objects and distant details. If the dot hides them, reduce its size.
  4. Compare first-person, third-person, and aiming down sights. A screen-center mark is not a substitute for the weapon's sights.

Are crosshair overlays allowed in DayZ?

The server documentation explains the native crosshair setting; it does not approve third-party overlays. We do not have a publisher approval specific to ChrossX to cite. Check the current game, server, and event rules before using it.

If a server prohibits external aiming references, disable the overlay. For display issues, start with windowed or borderless mode and the correct monitor. Our compatibility guide covers the remaining checks.

Common DayZ crosshair questions

Can I turn the crosshair back on as a player?

The documented server setting is controlled by the administrator. If the native reticle is deliberately disabled, discuss it with the operator rather than assuming a client setting will override it.

Does a dot show exactly where my bullet will land?

No. It is a visual reference at one screen position. Your view, weapon, distance, and the game's ballistics still determine the result.

Is ChrossX available on consoles?

ChrossX is a Windows application. It is not a PlayStation or Xbox console overlay.
